Cost

Lifespan
Architectural shingles: 15 to 25 years in Hill Country sun and hail. Standing seam: 40 to 60 years with a quality finish. Exposed-fastener metal: the panels last as long, but the fastener washers fail at 15 to 20 years and need a campaign. Over the life of the house, standing seam is usually the lowest cost per year.
Hail
Shingles bruise and eventually leak; Class 4 shingles resist bruising far better than standard. Metal takes cosmetic dents and rarely leaks from hail itself, though vents, sealant and fasteners can be damaged. Many policies exclude cosmetic-only damage on metal, which is worth checking with your agent.
Wind
Both can be built for exposed ridgelines. Shingles need high-wind lines, six-nail installation and sealed ridges. Standing seam needs an engineered clip system. Installed to the minimum, both fail in Hill Country fronts; installed properly, both hold.
Heat
Metal with a reflective finish keeps attics noticeably cooler and can lower summer cooling bills. Reflective cool-roof shingles narrow the gap but don’t close it.
Looks
Standing seam in a matte finish is the Hill Country look on limestone and cedar homes, and it’s what most new construction in Fair Oaks Ranch and Cordillera Ranch uses. Designer shingles that mimic slate or shake suit some homes better, especially in neighborhoods where the HOA prefers a traditional profile.
Insurance
Many Texas insurers discount premiums for Class 4 shingles and for metal roofs. Ask your agent for the exact discount; we provide the documentation.
Noise
Metal over solid decking with underlayment is no louder than shingles. The barn-roof drumming people remember comes from metal over open framing.
Our recommendation
Staying ten-plus years, tired of hail claims, and the house suits it: standing seam. Selling within a few years or budget-constrained: Class 4 architectural shingles.
